Gift inscribed by author on title page. In Stigma: Saga for a New World, Valdivia S. Beauchamp narrates the trajectory of 23 Dutch/Brazilian Sephardic Jews from Recife to New Amsterdam, in the United States, now New York, the first cosmopolitan nucleus of the New World and the future financial capital of the 20th century. On the pretext of a voyage in search of her ancestry and its history, the principal character, the journalist Sarah, daughter of a Dutch father and a Brazilian mother, projects a panoramic vision not only of the saga of a people, but also of an important era in Brazilian history: the period of dutch conquest and the rule of Count Maurice of Nassau in Recife. By strict definition, Stigma is historical fiction. But imagery of the period is inserted along side the text, and, in the end Sarah writes a review of Stigma for an american newspaper. Devices like these reveal that the author has introduced an ingenious structure in which fiction and history, past and present, research and fantasy, word and image are balanced in a delicate and imagination-provoking equilibrium. ""Medals of Dishonour"" will reveal this little-known history, and will also show internationally renowned contemporary artists engaging with the medal as a vehicle for political and social comment. The first part of the catalog consists of a representative selection of about twenty medals of the 17th and 20th centuries, including Dutch medals satirizing James II and Louis XIV, German and British medals on financial scandal and political corruption, a French medal showing Napoleon III as a cockchafer, German WWI anti-war medals, and two of David Smithas Medal for Dishonor. The second part consists of medals and related drawings recently commissioned by the British Art Medal Trust from twelve celebrated contemporary artists. The artists were asked to make works focusing on important issues of our times. Subjects include war, race, ASBOs and our modern obsession with shopping. Subject: British Museum. Dept. The "intimate and expansive" (Time) memoir of "one of the most important artists working in the world today" (Financial Times), telling a remarkable history of China over the last hundred years while also illuminating his artistic process "Poignant . . . An illuminating through-line emerges in the many parallels Ai traces between his life and his father's."--The New York Times Book Review (Editors' Choice) ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR: Time, BookPage, Booklist, Kirkus Reviews Once a close associate of Mao Zedong and the nation's most celebrated poet, Ai Weiwei's father, Ai Qing, was branded a rightist during the Cultural Revolution, and he and his family were banished to a desolate place known as "Little Siberia," where Ai Qing was sentenced to hard labor cleaning public toilets. Ai Weiwei recounts his childhood in exile, and his difficult decision to leave his family to study art in America, where he befriended Allen Ginsberg and was inspired by Andy Warhol and the artworks of Marcel Duchamp. With candor and wit, he details his return to China and his rise from artistic unknown to art world superstar and international human rights activist--and how his work has been shaped by living under a totalitarian regime. Ai Weiwei's sculptures and installations have been viewed by millions around the globe, and his architectural achievements include helping to design the iconic Bird's Nest Olympic Stadium in Beijing. His political activism has long made him a target of the Chinese authorities, which culminated in months of secret detention without charge in 2011. Here, for the first time, Ai Weiwei explores the origins of his exceptional creativity and passionate political beliefs through his life story and that of his father, whose creativity was stifled. At once ambitious and intimate, Ai Weiwei's 1000 Years of Joys and Sorrows offers a deep understanding of the myriad forces that have shaped modern China, and serves as a timely reminder of the urgent need to protect freedom of expression., Crown, 2021, 6, Media Associates International, 2019. FIRST & ONLY EDITION This is an important World War II group of "official policy" declarations by the Japanese government. Much can be also stated to be "propaganda" for the benefit of the Japanese military and their war on America, Britain, China, Singapore, Thailand & Vietnam. Also contains many documents expounding the official Japanese text of various agreements, complaints and other official comments, often by famous Japanese politicians and later to be convicted "War Criminals," some of who were hanged by the tribunal after the war ! . Being entirely in English, the Japanese surely directed their comments to the enemy English-speaking world for the most effect. It was a huge "propaganda" effort to translate each month's political position papers, documents and other artistic essays, one is at a loss to understand the Japanese concept of engaging in a war with America and Britain, while still providing artistic, articles on Japanese art, culture and other non-war related essays in English. . During 1942 was a "watershed" and historic group of actions that reflected the temporary strength of the Japanese, the fall of Singapore, sinking of famous British war ships, the evacuation of America's west coast Japanese and other actions by the Japanese military in China. A year full of important war history and facts. *** THIS ITEM COVERS JULY-DECEMBER 1942, the height of Japanese success during the China, Pacific and South-Pacific War. . The average press run was approximately 45,000--few copies typically survived. This issue addressed in large part the National Geographic Society's television special program "The Incredible Machine", which was aired on the Public Broadcasting System by WQED/Pittsburgh on October 28, 1975. The Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, also known as AG Bell, is a resource, support network and advocate for listening, learning, talking and living independently with hearing loss. Through publications, advocacy, training, scholarships and financial aid, AG Bell promotes the use of spoken language as well as hearing technology for children with hearing loss. It is headquartered in Washington, D.C., with chapters located throughout the United States and a network of international affiliates. The Association also sponsors the AG Bell College Scholarship Awards Program. In 2010, 18 awards were granted ranging from $1,000 to $10,000. The Association was originally created as the American Association to Promote the Teaching of Speech to the Deaf (AAPTSD). It was renamed as the Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf in 1956. In 1999 the Association was finally renamed to the Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. Man: The Incredible Machine is a 1975 American documentary film directed by Irwin Rosten and Ed Spiegel. It was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. E. G. Marshall narrated the film, which was produced by Rosten, together with Dennis B. Kane and Alex Pomansanof. Man: The Incredible Machine, which included some of the first pictures taken inside the human body and presented on film, using some of the earliest film that medical researchers had taken inside the human digestive tract and bloodstream. It ranked as the most-watched program in Public Broadcasting Service until 1982, when it was overtaken by The Sharks. Rosten's collaborator Nicholas Noxon described the "extraordinary impact" that the film had as a National Geographic special, noting that it was "groundbreaking for its time" and "opened people's eyes to what could be done with a documentary". The New York Times reviewer John J. O'Connor cited the film's ability to allow PBS to compete with the major networks, saying that "commercial television should now be reeling from the success of [the] National Geographic documentary", which garnered 36% of the total television audience in the New York City area when it was shown on WNET Channel 13. Rosten was criticized by some for using film that had been taken inside monkeys and rabbits. The New York Times noted criticism that viewers had been led to believe that the film was composed entirely of shots taken inside the human body, while nearly 5% was actually taken inside animals for details of the lungs, blood circulation and the reproductive system. Rosten had used film of human subjects wherever possible but that when "it was impossible to get inside the body we used film of mammals that would be exact representations of what we wanted to show". The National Geographic Society had been informed by Rosten that animal footage was included, but a disclaimer was not included in the film., The Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf, Inc, 1975, 2.5, Santa Fe, NM: The Santa Fe Opera, 1997. Santa Fe Opera (SFO) is an American opera company, located 7 miles north of Santa Fe, New Mexico. After creating the Opera Association of New Mexico in 1956, its founding director, John Crosby, oversaw the building of the first opera house on a newly acquired former guest ranch of 199 acres. The company has presented operas each summer festival season since July 1957, and is internationally known for introducing new operas as well as for its productions of the standard operatic repertoire. Since its inception, Santa Fe Opera has staged 43 American premieres and 15 world premieres, as of 2017. John Crosby, who was a New York-based conductor, founded the company in 1956, initially with the financial support of his parents, who helped in the acquisition of the land and the building of the first opera house. One goal was to give American singers the opportunity to learn and perform new roles while having ample time for rehearsal and preparation in the context of a summer festival situation with the presentation of five operas in repertory. Its first season began on 3 July 1957 with a performance of Puccini's Madama Butterfly. Crosby remained as general director until 2000, the longest general directorship in US opera history. Richard Gaddes served as the company's general director from 2000 through 2008. In November 2007, SFO named Charles MacKay the company's third general director, effective 1 October 2008. In August 2017, the company announced the intention of MacKay to stand down as its general director after the 2018 season. In addition to being the opera company's founding general director, Crosby had simultaneously served as its de facto first principal conductor. Alan Gilbert became the company's first music director from 2003 to 2006. Kenneth Montgomery, a regular guest conductor starting in 1982, served as interim music director for the 2007 season., The Santa Fe Opera, 1997, 3, New York: Open Society Foundations, 2015. Amrit Singh directs the project on national security and counterterrorism at the Open Society Justice Initiative. She conducts strategic litigation, documentation and advocacy on a range of human rights issues relating to counterterrorism measures such as counter-radicalization, freedom of expression restraints, drone killings, rendition, torture, and arbitrary detention. Among other cases, she successfully litigated al Nashiri v. Poland, a challenge before the European Court of Human Rights to Poland's hosting of a secret CIA prison. She is the author of Eroding Trust, Death by Drone, and Globalizing Torture, and the co-author of Administration of Torture. Previously, Singh was a staff attorney at the American Civil Liberties Union, where she litigated immigrants' rights and national security cases. She also served as a law clerk to Judge Cedarbaum of the U.S. District Court in New York. She is a graduate of the Yale Law School, Oxford University, and Cambridge University. This report was jointly produced by the Mwatana Organization for Human Rights, a Yemeni non-governmental organization, and the Open Society Justice Initiative. It documents the civilian harm caused by nine U.S. airstrikes, all apparently conducted by unmanned aerial vehicles (drones), in Yemen between May 2012 and April 2014. Field research for this report was conducted from May 2013 until April 2014, at the sites where each airstrike took place, in al-Baidha, Sana'a, al-Jawf, Hadramout, Marib, and Dhamar Governorates. The field research included 96 interviews with injured survivors and eyewitnesses of U.S. airstrikes, relatives of individuals killed or injured in these attacks, local community leaders, doctors and hospital staff who were involved in the treatment of victims, and Yemeni government officials. The research also gathered corroborating information, including written government statements issued in relation to civilian victims, photographs and videos of the aftermath of the drone strikes, and medical records. An independent munitions expert provided additional analysis. Research for this report was conducted in a context of pervasive U.S. and Yemeni government secrecy concerning the airstrikes, the tense security situation in many of the regions where the strikes took place, as well as the fear of reprisals that local communities experience in speaking openly about the strikes. In some instances, members of communities affected by the strikes refused to be interviewed. In other instances, security concerns prevented access to the sites of airstrikes. Interviews for this report were conducted in Arabic and translated into English. The interviewees were informed of the purpose of the interview and asked if they consented to their identities being disclosed in this report. The report does not provide identifying information for interviewees who were not comfortable with being identified. No financial or other incentives were offered to the interviewees for speaking with the researchers. This report does not purport to provide a comprehensive account of all civilian harm associated with all U.S. airstrikes in Yemen. Especially in light of the U.S. and Yemeni government secrecy associated with these strikes, it would be virtually impossible to conduct such a comprehensive study with sufficient accuracy. Rather, the aim of this report is to document the civilian harm caused by nine specific U.S. airstrikes. Specifically, this report seeks to determine the extent of this harm and when it occurred in relation to President Obama's Defense University (NDU) speech outlining the policy guidelines applied to U.S. targeted killings. The nine incidents described in this report were selected after research confirmed initial accounts of civilian harm from these strikes. In a number of cases, our findings of civilian casualties were confirmed by the statements and/or actions of Yemeni government officials, as well as other public reports. In other instances, initial reports of civilian casualties could not be confirmed on closer examination; these instances are not included in this report. In still other cases, closer examination suggested that civilian casualties had occurred but adverse security conditions precluded access to the locations where those attacks occurred; these instances are also not described in this report., Open Society Foundations, 2015, 2.5, San Francisco, CA: Jossey-Bass [a WIley Brand], 2013. He is the author of three books: Building Beehives (2004), Getting Change Right (2010) and Getting Innovation Right (2013)....Kahan was born in New York City on July 9, 1959. In 1980, he graduated with a BA in Mathematics from Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. From 1978 to 1992 Kahan wrote, directed, produced, and performed experimental theater. He led ensembles of up to forty musicians, dancers, poets, and actors. He also did a number of original one-man shows and was a professional storyteller from 1984 to 1996 with a focus on ritual, human transformation, and rites of passage. This work evolved into Kahan's organizational change work, enabling him to build engagement in multicultural, decentralized, and multi-disciplinary organizations. From 1996 to 1998, Kahan was a member of the team that spearheaded knowledge management in the World Bank, and helped champion organizational storytelling as a legitimate knowledge management practice. In 1999 he became the World Bank's Communications Manager for a worldwide IT systems renewal effort. From 2000-2002 he worked with the president of the World Bank, James Wolfensohn, on internal communication and building internal communities to address strategic issues on a global scale. He developed strategy for the Peace Corps under director Gaddi Vasquez from 2004-2005, and provided change leadership at Royal Dutch Shell from 2007-2009, most notably for the introduction of Smart Fields in the Americas, a $20 million initiative which introduced advanced technology to obtain detailed data on oil and gas fields, helping to improve recovery and raise production. In 2008 Kahan helped leaders of organizations respond to the US Financial Crisis. As a result he began to focus on innovation in the face of disruption. He identified the four forces of disruption (customer challenges, industries upending, competition, and the rise of new business models) and his approach for successfully dealing with each. From 2010 onward Kahan has worked with the HR Certification Institute to raise a national conversation on the value of innovation in Human Resources for organizational strategy. Since 2012 he has worked with the National Apartment Association to raise operations and member engagement to world class, addressing issues that include governance transformation, data acquisition and mining, and customer service. Woods, Executive Director of the Special Libraries Association. Acronym agglomeration is an affliction of the age, and there are acronym addicts who, in their weakness, find it impossible to resist them. It is then for the reader and listener and for the writer and speaker that Reta C. Moser has compiled this guide. Its effective application to the art of communication is urged. Such use should help avoid many of the misunderstandings involving terminology which occur daily. Although such misunderstandings are certainly crucial in humanistic and social situations, they are often of immediate import and the trigger to disaster in scientific, technical, and political situations. Many acronyms and definitions are provided, with due credit to Miss Moser's diligence in making the compilation and with the acknowledgment that the acronymical phenomenon is very much with us. This first edition is certain to be of value to writers, librarians, editors, and others who must identify and deal with acronyms. Special Libraries Association (SLA) is an international professional association for library and information professionals working in business, government, law, finance, non-profit, and academic organizations and institutions. The Special Libraries Association was founded in 1909 in the United States by a group of librarians working in specialized settings, led by John Cotton Dana, who served as the first president of SLA from 1909 to 1911. In the years prior to SLA's founding Dana and other librarians saw an increasing demand for the types of materials that specialized libraries could provide, and recognized that as information professionals working in such settings responded to the demands of their jobs they were creating a new kind of librarianship. The group sought to address their common problems by banding together. Their goal, as stated in the first issue of Special Libraries, was to "unite in co-operation all small libraries throughout the country; financial, commercial, scientific, industrial; and special departments of state, college and general libraries; and, in fact, all libraries devoted to special purposes and serving a limited clientage."., Plenum Press, 1964, 2.5, Washington DC: The Arms Control Association, 2014. Presumed First Edition, First printing. Wraps. Very good. [2], 30 pages. Tables. Graphs. This is and Arms Control Association Report. The author has most recently been associated with The Ploughshares Fund. As director of policy he brings 25 years of Washington, DC experience in nuclear weapons, missile defense and nonproliferation issues to Ploughshares Fund. He has worked extensively as a researcher, analyst, and advocate to strengthen the efforts to end US nuclear testing, rationalize anti-missile programs, extend the Nonproliferation Treaty, and secure Senate ratification of the New START Treaty among others. Prior to joining Ploughshares Fund in 2014, Tom served as Research Director of the Arms Control Association. He was the Executive Director and Co-Founder of the Institute for Science and International Security and the Director of the Global Security Program at the Union of Concerned Scientists, among other leadership positions. He has published widely in major magazines and journals and has appeared frequently in the national media. The Arms Control Association is a United States-based nonpartisan membership organization founded in 1971, with the self-stated mission of "promoting public understanding of and support for effective arms control policies." The report, entitled "The Unaffordable Arsenal: Reducing the Costs of the Bloated U.S. Nuclear Stockpile," examines the role of the nuclear weapons arsenal in the Pentagon's current budget crisis. In it, Collina argues that the military's budget crunch is not so much the result of low funding, but a misallocation of what funding already exists. Rather than spending $355 billion on nuclear weapons over the next 10 years (and up to $1 trillion over the next 30), military planners should use a portion of that money to fund the conventional forces supposedly starved for cash. The gratuitous size of America's nuclear weapons stockpile makes this not only a smart financial decision, but a safe strategic decision as well.According analysis by Collina --who joined the Ploughshares Fund last month after five years as the Research Director of the ACA-- the U.S. should be able to save $70 billion over ten years through commonsense cuts across the triad, and still deploy the 1,500 warhead maximum allowed by the New START treaty. This recommendation follows three main principles: not replacing weapons systems prematurely, not replacing weapons simply because they have been in the arsenal before, and reevaluating whether the U.S. needs to maintain cold-war level nuclear capabilities., The Arms Control Association, 2014, 3, Boston, MA: Harvard Business School Press, 1999. He worked as a sportswriter in Miami and received an M.A. in English at City College. From 1995 to 2002 he wrote for The Atlantic Monthly and his work has also appeared in Harper's, Discover, DoubleTake, and other publications. His book The Ozone Layer was selected by The New York Public Library as one of the best books of 1993. His book Tube: the Invention of Television was published in 1996. Strangers in the Night: a Brief History of Life on Other Worlds, was selected by the New York Public Library as one of the twenty-five Books to Remember of 1998. A Terrible Splendor was published to great acclaim. The Washington Post wrote, "Fisher has gotten hold of some mighty themes: war and peace, love and death, sports and savagery.... As the match enters its final set, all the narrative pieces lock together, and A Terrible Splendor becomes as engrossing as the contest it portrays." The Wall Street Journal found the book "rich and rewarding," and the San Francisco Chronicle called Splendor "enthralling...a gripping tale.... Wedding the nuances of a sport to broader historical events is a challenge, but Fisher pulls the task off with supreme finesse, at once revealing the triumph and tragedy of a remarkable tennis match." Before Federer versus Nadal, before Borg versus McEnroe, the greatest tennis match ever played pitted the dominant Don Budge against the seductively handsome Baron Gottfried von Cramm. This deciding 1937 Davis Cup match, played on the hallowed grounds of Wimbledon, was a battle of titans: the world's number one tennis player against the number two; America against Germany; democracy against fascism. For five superhuman sets, the duo's brilliant shotmaking kept the Centre Court crowd-and the world-spellbound. But the match's significance extended well beyond the immaculate grass courts of Wimbledon. Against the backdrop of the Great Depression and the brink of World War II, one man played for the pride of his country while the other played for his life. Budge, the humble hard-working American who would soon become the first man to win all four Grand Slam titles in the same year, vied to keep the Davis Cup out of the hands of the Nazi regime. On the other side of the net, the immensely popular and elegant von Cramm fought Budge point for point knowing that a loss might precipitate his descent into the living hell being constructed behind barbed wire back home. Born into an aristocratic family, von Cramm was admired for his devastating good looks as well as his unparalleled sportsmanship. But he harbored a dark secret, one that put him under increasing Gestapo surveillance. And his situation was made even more perilous by his refusal to join the Nazi Party or defend Hitler. Desperately relying on his athletic achievements and the global spotlight to keep him out of the Gestapo's clutches, his strategy was to keep traveling and keep winning. A Davis Cup victory would make him the toast of Germany. A loss might be catastrophic. Watching the mesmerizingly intense match from the stands was von Cramm's mentor and all-time tennis superstar Bill Tilden-a consummate showman whose double life would run in ironic counterpoint to that of his German pupil. Set at a time when sports and politics were inextricably linked, A Terrible Splendor gives readers a courtside seat on that fateful day, moving gracefully between the tennis match for the ages and the dramatic events leading Germany, Britain, and America into global war. A book like no other in its weaving of social significance and athletic spectacle, this soul-stirring account is ultimately a tribute to the strength of the human spirit., Crown Publishers, 2009, 3, Boston, MA: Harvard Business School Press, 1999. Being entirely in English, the Japanese surely directed their comments to the enemy English-speaking world for the most effect. It was a huge "propaganda" effort to translate each month's political position papers, documents and other artistic essays, one is at a loss to understand the Japanese concept of engaging in a war with America and Britain, while still providing artistic, articles on Japanese art, culture and other non-war related essays in English. From Wikipedia: "Seth Kahan (July 9, 1959) is an American author and change agent specializing in business innovation. Kahan left the World Bank in 2002 and founded his own company, Visionary Leadership. Since that time, he has worked with over 60 CEOs and executive directors. Cairncross is also the author of The Death of Distance, a study of the economic and social effects of the global communications revolution. In 2004-05, Cairncross held the honorary post of High Sheriff of Greater London. Never before in human history has technology advanced as quickly as today. The biggest changes are taking place in communications and computers, which are being combined in new and astonishing ways. In The Death of Distance, Frances Cairncross analyzes the impact of this revolution on business, government, and society. The author sees a world where time zones will matter more than miles, where culture, language, and interests bind communities more closely than geography, and where new ideas and information will travel faster than ever before to the remotest corners of the globe. The death of distance as a determinant of the cost of communicating may well be the single most important force shaping society in the first half of this century., Harvard Business School Press, 1999, 3<
