As a past president of both the Mormon History Association (1990-1991) and the John Whitmer His¬torical Association (1985-1986), he has been a leading figure in the "New Mormon History" movement. His Herald House book, Restoration Scriptures: A Study of Their Textual Development, was honored in 1970 by the MHA as "Book of the Year." He has served as RLDS Church historian since 1966. A Graceland graduate, Dick Howard received a bachelor's degree in education from the University of Kansas and then served in the U.S. Army CIC. He later earned a master's degree in history at the University of California-Berkeley and has since taken further graduate studies at the University of Kansas, American University in Washington, D.C., and Saint Paul School of Theology in Kansas City, Missouri.
