In 1834 a group of five missionaries from the Berlin Missionary Society arrived in South Africa to begin their missionary work. Leaving Graaff-Reinet on 12 August 1834 in the company of Dr Andrew Smith to find a suitable location for a mission station they had, by the end of the following September, established a mission station at Bethanie - north of the Orange River and near to the present town of Edenburgh. Some 200 missionaries of the Berlin Missionary Society came to South Africa and established many new mission stations.
