Nauru the small Pacific Coral island lying just south of the equator, has supplied high-grade phosphate to the outside world for almost the entire 20th century. Phosphate and Nauru seem to belong together as if the island had no history before the mine. But the impression is misleading. This unique collection of previously unpublished documents shows us a different, pre-phosphate Nauru--the Nauru of the late nineteenth century, when the Germans raised the flag and administered the island as part of their colonial possessions in the tropical Pacific. The documents, a significant proportion of all German official records on late 19th century Nauru, are reproduced here bothin the original German and in an English version expertly translated by Dymphna Clark. They are accompanied by an extensive commentary by the late WIlhelm Fabricius, who devoted the last years of his life to an exacting study of early colonial Nauru.
