Per essere definiti bilingui non è necessario avere una padronanza perfettamente bilanciata delle lingue conosciute, sostiene Grosjean, né occorre esserlo divenuti sin da bambini (e sicuramente un bilingue non è per forza un traduttore nato). Basta saper usare due o più lingue (o dialetti) nella vita di ogni giorno, alternandoli a seconda della situazione nella quale ci si trova o dell'argomento del quale si sta discutendo. I bilingui smettono allora di essere una rarità, per arrivare anzi a rappresentare quasi la metà della popolazione mondiale. In questo libro l'autore prende in esame una serie di idee preconcette (tra cui quelle appena viste) e ne smonta in modo sistematico i presupposti attraverso l'esame dei più rilevanti fenomeni riguardanti il bilinguismo e i bilingui, dal cambiamento di codice ai prestiti e alle interferenze (grammaticali, fonetiche, lessicali). Se i genitori di un bambino decidono di crescerlo nel bilinguismo, quali strategie, quali accorgimenti usare, quali errori sono assolutamente da evitare? E che ruolo può svolgere la scuola?
