Aphrodisias, crown of the ancient cities of Asia, is a treasure house of Greco-Roman art and architecture in west central Turkey. Much larger and richer than Pompeii, the city was destroyed by a massive earthquake in the 4th century BCE and it remained isolated and undisturbed until rediscovered in recent times. Excavation began in 1904, continued under Italian auspices in the 1930s, and began again in 1961 under the direction of Erim (New York University). Despite the extraordinary richness of Aphrodisian architecture and architectural sculpture created in the Roman period, only scanty publications have appeared. The present volume is the first large-scale publication on Aphrodisias, and it emphasizes the results of the archaeological activity at the site during the past 25 years. It is essentially a popular account of the history of the city and of its excavations with reports on important recent discoveries, such as the spectacular Sebasteion, as well as a review of the more impressive monuments and sculptures recently revealed. Many handsome photographs, for the most part in color, accompany the discursive text and give strong visual evidence of the splendor of Aphrodisias. The scholar's appetite for the future scientific publication of the great monuments of this magnificent Hellenistic-Roman site will certainly be stimulated by Erim's survey.
