The idea that John Wesley and the Wesleyans (or Methodists) triggered a widespread evangelical revival in 18th century England that saved the country from excesses that characterized the French Revolution is a myth, suggests Kent (emeritus, theology, U. of Bristol, UK). He argues that there was no widespread revival and that the movement was confined to the middle classes. The institutions that developed from Wesleyanism had far greater influence in the 19th century than at the time of Wesley, contends Kent. He analyzes the origins of the authoritarian tendencies of Wesleyan Protestantism, finding such factors as Wesley's personality, industrialization, and urbanization to three of the most important causes.
