Name of previous owner present. Gilbert Rozman is a Senior Fellow with Foreign Policy Research Institute's Asia Program and the editor-in-chief of The Asan Forum, a bi-monthly journal on international relations in the Asia-Pacific region. He is also the Emeritus Musgrave Professor of Sociology at Princeton University, where he spent 43 years on the faculty. He specializes on Northeast Asia, including China, Japan, Russia, and South Korea. His research has examined bilateral relations and mutual perceptions, national identities, strategic thinking, strategies for regionalism, and historical factors affecting policy choices. Rozman has repeatedly turned to Sino-Russian, Russo-Japanese, Sino-Korean, Japanese-Korean, and Sino-Japanese relations, as they have evolved. In doing so, he has concentrated on sources in these countries that help to understand the causes of problematic relations. In The Asan Forum, he writes Washington Insights, reporting on events in DC that shed light on ongoing policy deliberations and proposals. In the Modernization of China, an interdisciplinary team of scholars collaborate closely to provide the first systematic, integrated analysis of China in transformation--from an agrarian-based to an urbanized and industrialized society. Moving from the legacy of the Ming and Ch'ing dynasties to the reforms and revolutions of the 20th century, the authors seek reasons for China's inability to achieve rapid, steady growth during a 200 year-long struggle to modernize. They examine the changing shape of Chinese society: the role of the state in politics; military affairs; economics; the educational system; changes in family; population, and settlement patterns; science and technology; world views and foreign relations. They make comparisons between China's experience with growth and that of two other latecomers to modernization, Japan and Russia. This is a book that brings much-needed clarity and perspective to our understanding of China, and the way a great civilization attempts to meet the challenge of modernity., The Free Press, 1981, 3, New York: Crown Forum, 2018. New York Times Bestseller: An urgent argument that America and other democracies are in peril because they have lost the will to defend the values and institutions that sustain freedom and prosperity. Epic and debate-shifting. --David Brooks, New York Times. Only once in the last 250,000 years have humans stumbled upon a way to lift ourselves out of the endless cycle of poverty, hunger, and war that defines most of history. If democracy, individualism, and the free market were humankind's destiny, they should have appeared and taken hold a bit earlier in the evolutionary record. The emergence of freedom and prosperity was nothing short of a miracle. As Americans we are doubly blessed, because the radical ideas that made the miracle possible were written not just into the Constitution but in our hearts, laying the groundwork for our uniquely prosperous society. Those ideas are: · Our rights come from God, not from the government. · The government belongs to us; we do not belong to it. · The individual is sovereign. We are all captains of our own souls, not bound by the circumstances of our birth. · The fruits of our labors belong to us. In the last few decades, these political virtues have been turned into vices. As we are increasingly taught to view our traditions as a system of oppression, exploitation, and privilege, the principles of liberty and the rule of law are under attack from left and right. For the West to survive, we must renew our sense of gratitude for what our civilization has given us and rediscover the ideals and habits of the heart that led us out of the bloody muck of the past, or back to the muck we will go., Crown Forum, 2018, 3, New York: Simon and Schuster, 1987. First Printing [Stated]. Hardcover. Very good/Good. Sigrid Estrada (Jacket photograph). 223, [1] pages. Notes Index. DJ is price clipped and has some wear and soiling. Signed by the author on the fep. George Frederick Will (born May 4, 1941) is an American libertarian-conservative political commentator and author. He writes regular columns for The Washington Post and provides commentary for NBC News and MSNBC. In 1986, The Wall Street Journal called him "perhaps the most powerful journalist in America", in a league with Walter Lippmann (1889-1974). He won the Pulitzer Prize for Commentary in 1977. Will originally had left wing political views, but his views shifted toward conservatism during his studies at Oxford, especially after visiting Communist-controlled East Berlin in the mid-1960s. Will served as an editor for National Review from 1972 to 1978. He joined The Washington Post Writers Group in 1974, writing a syndicated biweekly column, which became widely circulated among newspapers across the country and continues today. His column was syndicated to about 450 newspapers. In 1976 he became a contributing editor for Newsweek, writing a biweekly backpage column until 2011. Will's columns are known for their erudite vocabulary, allusions to political philosophers, and references to baseball. Will has also written two bestselling books on the game of baseball, three books on political philosophy, and has published eleven compilations of his columns for The Washington Post and Newsweek and of various book reviews and lectures. In 2020, Will received the National Society for Newspaper Columnists 2020 Ernie Pyle Lifetime Achievement Award. Derived from a Publishers Weekly article: Since there will be no incumbent running and both major party nominations for the 1988 presidential election will be up for grabs, it promises to be an unusually unpredictable and entertaining ball game, in the view of national political columnist and TV commentator Will. With discernment and wit directed at both major parties, and in the light of historical perspective, he reviews how a wide range of economic, demographic, regional and generational factors, along with recent political patterns, are likely to help determine issues and themes of candidates' campaigns and affect the election. In 1988, Republicans must retain Reagan loyalists and Democrats must recapture lost constituencies. The winner, Will notes, will inherit Reagan's deficit and a large government, both of which he had vowed to reduce. Among other recommendations, the author urgently advocates that the U.S. remain in a strong defensive position vs. the Soviets despite pressures to achieve an arms-control agreement., Simon and Schuster, 1987, 2.75, New York, N.Y.: Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2003. First Edition [Stated], First Printing [Stated]. Hardcover. Very good/Good. Barbara Kinney, Front Jacket photograph). [10], 822 pages. DJ has wear and soiling. Chapters cover The Challenge to the Old Order; The Forces are Arrayed; First Blood; Clinton's Strategic Offensive; Hillary Under Siege; A Political Education; Mine Canary; Inside the West Wing; Clinton's Third Way; Seven Days in January; In Starr's Chamber; The Reign of Witches; Show Trial; The Twenty-first Century; A New York State of Mind; The Stolen Succession; The Sands of Time; and The American Conflict. Sidney Stone Blumenthal (born November 6, 1948) is an American journalist and political operative. He is a former aide to President Bill Clinton; a long-time confidant of Hillary Clinton, formerly employed by the Clinton Foundation; and a journalist, particularly known for his writings about American politics and foreign policy. Over time, Blumenthal became increasingly controversial for his partisan brand of journalism, viewed as an archetype of a new type of journalist who have eroded the divide between the fading boundaries between independent journalism and partisan journalism. After the Clinton presidency, Blumenthal's book, The Clinton Wars, was published, historian Robert Dallek praised the book, opining that "Blumenthal's sprawling 800-page memoir of his four years as a presidential assistant" was a "welcome addition to the literature on Bill Clinton's tumultuous second term." Dallek also wrote that "Blumenthal brings a reporter's keen eye for telling detail and a columnist's talent for considered analysis and unmistakable opinion to his reconstruction of what he calls the Clinton wars." The chronicle of Bill Clinton's 1992 presidential campaign and first term draws on the author's experiences as confidant to both the President and the First Lady, and is enriched with previously unpublished revelations about both. Blumenthal's remarkable personal interpretation goes far in explaining the polarizing presence on the national scene. The narrative of Clinton's second term is even more dramatic. Blumenthal takes special note of the battle waged within the media between the President's detractors and his defenders, which he expands into a vivid picture of Washington society torn apart by warring factions. But he does not neglect the wars fought on other fronts--the devastating war in Kosovo; Clinton's political conflicts in the Congress; his crusade to sustain a fiscally sound economic policy that would foster prosperity; and, of course, his struggle against the impeachment charges brought against him. An invaluable history of an extraordinary presidency, and the chronicle of a generation's political odyssey. When in 1997 Bill Clinton appointed Sidney Blumenthal as a senior advisor, the former writer was catapulted into the front lines of the Clinton wars. From his first day in the White House until long after his appearance as the only presidential aide ever to testify in an impeachment trial, Blumenthal acted in or witnessed nearly all the battles of the Clinton years. His major new book 'part history, part memoir' is the first inside account we have of the presidency of William Jefferson Clinton. The Clinton Wars begins in 1987, when Blumenthal first met Bill and Hillary Clinton. His chronicle of Clinton s first presidential campaign and first term draws on his experiences as confidant to both the President and the First Lady, and is enriched with previously unpublished revelations about both. This remarkable personal interpretation goes far in explaining the polarizing nature of Clinton s presence on the national scene. The narrative of Clinton s second term is even more dramatic. But he does not neglect the wars fought on other fronts in Kosovo, against Congress, and for economic prosperity. His remarkable book ends with the inside story of the fight to elect Al Gore in 2000 and extend the legacy of the Clinton-Gore Administration. Every page of this unrivaled, authoritative book, with its intimate insights into Clinton's personality and politics, attests to Blumenthal's literary skill, profound understanding of politics, and unique perspective on crucial events of our recent past. New York: Dafran House Publishers, Inc, 1973. Presumed First Edition, First printing. Trade paperback. Fair. 252, [4] pages. Illustrated with black and white and color reproductions of famous posters of the war. Edges of several early pages have a smallish tear. Cover has some wear and soiling and price sticker in upper right corner. This essential reference work addresses poster sizes, condition, pricing, reproductions, prewar enlistment posters, public awareness posters as well as War Enlistment posters, Liberty Loans, War Savings Stamps, Tribute posters, United War Work, Red Cross, Relief, Shipping Board, Causes, Postwar Readjustment, Miscellaneous Advertising, and Sheet music. It presents biographical data on war artists. George Theofiles was a Pennsylvania poster dealer, appraiser, and consultant in the area of poster art and paper Americana. The First World War was the first war in which mass media and propaganda played a significant role in keeping the people at home informed about what was occurring on the battlefields. This was also the first war in which the government systematically produced propaganda as a way to target the public and alter their opinion. Propaganda worked on a variety of ideological underpinnings such as atrocity propaganda, propaganda dedicated to nationalism and patriotism, and propaganda focused on women. In 1917 President Wilson created the Committee on Public Information. It reported directly to President Wilson and was essentially a massive generator of propaganda. The Committee on Public Information was responsible for producing films, commissioning posters, publishing numerous books and pamphlets, purchasing advertisements in major newspapers, and recruiting businessmen, preachers and professors to serve as public speakers in charge of altering public opinion at the communal level. Creel and his committee used every possible mode to get their message across, including printed word, spoken word, the motion picture, the telegraph, the poster, and the signboard. All forms of communication were put to use to justify the causes that compelled America to take arms. Creel set out systematically to reach every person in the United States multiple times with patriotic information about how the individual could contribute to the war effort. The CPI also worked with the post office to censor seditious counter propaganda. Creel set up divisions in his new agency to produce and to distribute innumerable copies of pamphlets, newspaper releases, magazine advertisements, films, school campaigns, and the speeches of the Four Minute Men. The CPI created colorful posters that appeared in every store window to catch the attention of passersby for a few seconds., Dafran House Publishers, Inc, 1973, 2, New York, N.Y.: Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2003. Includes Acknowledgments, Illustrations and Index. The Clinton Wars is a lasting contribution to American history., Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2003, 2.75<

Illustrated with black and white and color reproductions of famous posters of the war. Edges of several early pages have a smallish tear.
