The Benaki Museum was founded by Antonis Benakis, a visionary collector and cosmopolitan Greek patriot born and raised in Alexandria, Egypt. This book aims to set Langland's discussions of government in their precise fourteenth-century context, relating them to each other and to the poem as a whole. Landland's political statements are not merely theoretical; Dr. Baldwin shows how they are firmly rooted in the day-to-day realities of contemporary life, and draws on examples from legal records and chronicles to make her case. In the past, historians have used the poem to illustrate historical points; but if the process is reversed, and history is put to the service of the poem, much that is otherwise obscure can be elucidated. Lanfland often defines the problems in legal terms, and these must first be understood, but the social malaise which he wishes to cure also has it historical reality, and his remedies are drawn from contemporary ideas on politics and government.
