A Commentary on Livy. Books XXXIV-XXXVII. von Briscoe, John:Autor(en) Briscoe, John:Verlag / Jahr Oxford at the Clarendon Press, 1981.Format / Einband Hardcover with dustjacket. XX, 442 p.: Maps.Gewicht ca. 729 gISBN 0198144555EAN 9780198144557Bestell-Nr 1203822Bemerkungen Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Schutzumschlag berieben, Buchrücken stark ausgeblichen, leichte Randläsuren, Kopf- und Fußschnitt mit kleinen Flecken, Bleistiftanmerkung auf Titelblatt, sonst gut und innen sauber / dust jacket rubbed, spine heavily faded, light edgewear, top and bottom edges with small stains, pencil annotation on title page, otherwise good and clean inside. - This volume is a continuation of the author’s Commentary on Livy Books xxxi- xxxiii, published in 1973. Books xxxiv- xxxvii cover the years 195 to 189 B.C., and much of the narrative concerns the prelude to and course of the war with the Seleucid King Antiochus III. Book xxxiv contains a detailed account of Cato’s campaign in Spain, for which (it is argued) Livy consulted the works of Cato himself. Particular attention is again given to historical matters, but there is rather more textual and linguistic discussion than in the earlier volume. Dr. Briscoe has made his own collations of the principal manuscripts and is therefore able both to check the apparatus of the OCT (for Books xxxiv-xxxv) and, when textual discussion is necessary, to present for the first time the full evidence for the text of Books xxxvi- xxxvii, of which there is no modern critical edition. Introductory sections discuss such topics as Livy’s use of his sources and his style in these books, chronology, the causes of the war with Antiochus, and Roman policy in Northern Italy and Spain. Dr. Briscoe has visited most of the areas where the events described took place, and sketch-maps indicate the location of almost all the places mentioned in the text. / CONTENTS ABBREVIATIONS INTRODUCTION 1.
