Johnson's "Great Society" of the 1960s, Louis Brandeis and Felix Frankfurter influenced American life as few other persons have. Either together or singly, they participated in the closed~door sessions on Capitol Hill, advised in the privacy of the White House, and spoke for a new rule of justice from the Supreme Court. But more than intimates of the politically powerful, they also were movers, shapers, philosophers, and~when necessary~intriguers. Brandeis, the child of immigrants, was a father of the modern progressive movement. Frankfurter, an immigrant himself, carried on the tradition of his friend and mentor. Heroes to many, villains to some, they were ignored by none. Their stories have never been told as completely and as penetratingly as in Brandeis and Frankfurter: A Dual Biography. Pulitzer Prize winner Leonard Baker spent five years researching and writing this book. He examined original papers and oral histories, and interviewed those who had known both men to produce a dramatic account of the rise of liberalism as it shaped Brandeis's and Frankfurter's lives and as the two men shaped it. D.R., Tommy Corcoran, Hugo Black, Earl Warren, and others. Brandeis and Frankfurter also is the story of one of the most fascinating friendships in American history. Frankfurter, a Harvard Law School student, heard Brandeis, then the famous "people's lawyer," speak on the lawyer's responsibilities to society.
